ICM Series: Islamic Derivatives

 

Despite their importance in financial sector development, derivatives are few and far between in countries where the compatibility of capital market transactions with Islamic law requires the development of Shariah-compliant structures. Islamic finance is governed by the Shariah, which bans speculation, but stipulates that income must be derived as profits from shared business risk rather than interest or guaranteed return.

Programme Objective

This programme is designed to discuss the Islamic derivatives products and instruments as an alternative means of financing and investments. This module will cover the structures, features, Shariah and regulatory requirements applicable to Islamic derivatives products and instruments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  1. describe the Shariah-compliant derivatives and its regulatory framework;
  2. explain the concepts and contracts used in Shariah-compliant derivatives; and
  3. discuss the issues involving Shariah-compliant derivatives from Shariah perspectives.
