PROGRAMMES - Bumiputra Training (BTF / BDRF) : Mentoring Programme
An issue-based mentoring programme aimed at tackling and solving specific issues
Introduction
Mentoring is a mutually beneficial relationship that facilitates a learning relationship between an experienced person (mentor) who shares his knowledge, experience and insights and a less-experienced person (mentee) seeking to benefit from the process.
The SIDC mentoring programme is issue-based, aimed at tackling and solving specific issues. A gradual enhancement of performance can be achieved through constructive discussions with mentors that can result in pointing out specific areas that could to be strengthened.
The identified areas can then be addressed by gaining insights and understanding into the issues by direct discussion with mentors or development of specific skill sets through formal training e.g. increasing knowledge of specific products and/or strengthening soft skills.
The programme is overseen by the Bumiputera Training Fund’s Board of Trustees and supported by the Education Committee and a Finance Committee. The Board of Trustees, Education Committee and Finance Committee comprise representatives from the SC, Bursa Malaysia and Association of Stockbroking Companies Malaysia (ASCM).
Benefits for Mentees
- Enhances professional and marketing skills by learning directly from experienced persons of the industry;
- Explores opportunities, anxieties, barriers and feelings with reference to specific issues;
- Benchmarks principles of good practice;
- Increases market insights and enables discovery of new perspectives with the wisdom and counsel of the mentor; and
- Development of simple or innovative and realistic solutions to meet challenges and nurture a more effective and productive future performance.
Programme Pre-requisites
Both mentor and mentee are responsible for the success of the relationship. An openness to teach by mentors and a willingness to learn by mentees is an essential pre-requisite. Mutual trust, respect and a sense of confidentiality strengthens and enhances mentor/mentee relationships.
How It Works
- The duration for the first programme is set at one year. Appointed mentors will meet with mentees (i.e. dealer’s representatives registered in the programme) in a series of six mentoring sessions (every alternate month) and devote three hours per session to discussing specific issues and guiding mentees in dealing with the identified issues. Each mentor will oversee between 3-5 mentees;
- Mentors elected for the programme are required to register with the BTF secretariat and attend a one-day Train the Mentor programme;
- Registered mentors will be accredited with 10 CPE points upon completion of the programme;
- Mentees elected for the programme are required to register with the BTF secretariat and attend a three-hour Mentee Briefing; and
- Both mentors and mentees should report to the BTF secretariat within seven working days of every meeting on issues discussed and action plans in the format prescribed by the SIDC.
