CORPORATE PROFILE - Milestones and Achievements

2006

  • SIDC and APEC jointly organised a seminar on “Regulation of New Products”.
  • SIDC and Institute of Internal Auditing Malaysia (IIAM), organised a joint-venture programme entitled Internal Auditing, Risk Management and Compliance: Adding Value and Assurance.
  • Organised the first inaugural programme on the Islamic Markets Programme.
  • Organised the seminar on CSR, “Making a Difference Through Corporate Social Responsibility: Meeting the Challenges” which was a joint collaboration between the Securities Commission & UNDP.

2005

  • The CPE Tracker System was launched on 25 February. It is a web-based system that serves as a platform for the management in monitoring of the CPE programme.
  • SIDC etrain was launched on 4 July 2005 with the objective of providing accessible and convenient on-line training to cater for the needs of SC staff, licensed intermediaries and members of the public.
  • Co-hosted with the APEC/Asian Development Bank on the APEC Financial Regulators Training Initiative, Regional Seminar on Investigation and Enforcement.
  • Organised the sixth annual Emerging Markets Programme (EMP).
  • Collaborated with the Research Institute of Asia (RIAP) to organise a programme entitled “Strengthening Bond Market Development in APEC (SBMD)”.
  • Introduced a four-day programme entitled “Capital Market Insights for Financial Journalists”.
  • Conducted inaugural sessions of the Investment Representatives Preparatory Course to prepare candidates for Modules 12 and 15 licensing examinations.
  • SIDC worked with APEC, ASEAN, the OECD, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Research Institute of Asia and the Pacific (RIAP)facilitating training for fellow regulators.
  • SIDC supported the Commission’s efforts in the ASEAN+3 Asian Bond Market Initiative (ABMI) Coordination Group by organising a technical assistance workshop entitled "Moving the ABMI Agenda Forward: Securitisation and Cross-border Bond Issuance”

2004

  • Conducted a 12-month graduate training programme, Capital Market Graduate Training Scheme (CMGTS) to prepare graduates for the various careers in the capital market. It was initiated in 2003 to complement the government's initiatives to enhance the employability of graduates.
  • Organised the Kuala Lumpur International Bond Conference themed “Accelerating Bond Markets Development in Asia: Challenges and Opportunities” supported by Asian Bond Markets Initiative (ABMI).
  • Organised the APEC/Asian Development Bank regional seminar on market supervision.
  • Organised the annual Emerging Markets programme (EMP).
  • Jointly organised a corporate social responsibility (CSR) conference entitled “Creating Greater Competitive Advantage” with the British High Commission. This conference was targeted at company directors.
  • Organised a colloquium on Islamic Bonds in collaboration with the International Islamic University Malaysia.
  • Introduced the Trainee Dealer’s Representative Preparatory Course for Module 6 & 7 licensing examinations to assist examination candidates in preparing for the examinations.

2003

  • CPE Phase 2 was launched and has been extended to cover all other categories of licensed representatives.
  • The seminar entitled “Ethical Management: Direction and Challenges” at the Expert Discussion was jointly organised by SIDC and the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM).
  • SIDC established collaboration with four other training partners, namely the Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG), Rating Agency of Malaysia (RAM), Malaysian Venture Capital Association (MVCA) and the Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia (IIA Malaysia).
  • The establishment of the RM5 million Bumiputera Dealer’s Representatives Education Fund (BDREF), aimed at increasing the number of Bumiputera dealer’s representatives with professional qualifications.
  • SIDC launched the BTF Mentoring Programme in September 2003 to promote a culture of knowledge sharing within the industry.
  • SIDC was the co-ordinator of the ASEAN Project on “Collaborative Initiative on Capital Market Research and Training in Asean Member Countries” which works in consultation with the ADB and the ASEAN Secretariat.
  • SIDC and the Asian Development Bank jointly organised the APEC regional seminar on Investor Education: A Challenge for the Regulator.
  • The Commission’s Bumiputera Unit and the SIDC jointly organised a seminar for Bumiputera entrepreneurs entitled Capital Market: The Way Forward for Dynamic Entrepreneurs.
  • Jointly organised a seminar on “Fund Management: Best Practices for Investor Protection” with the Malaysian Association of Asset Managers (MAAM)
  • Organised the annual Emerging Markets Programme (EMP).

2002

  • SIDC and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) jointly organised a programme entitled “National Training Programme on Market Supervision” which was held under the auspices of the APEC Financial Regulators Training Initiative (FRTI).
  • SIDC organised the Islamic Capital Market Week, 26-30 March 2002. The Kuala Lumpur International Islamic Capital Market Conference was jointly organised by SIDC and the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) was held during the week.
  • SIDC and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) jointly organised “National Training Programme on Investigation and Enforcement” which was held under the auspices of the APEC Financial Regulators Training Initiative (FRTI).
  • SIDC organised a seminar on "Personal Financial Planning for Malaysian Women” to educate women on how to manage their finances effectively and attain financial security.
  • SIDC and Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG) organised a seminar on “Investor Relations and Shareholder Communications – What Every Director Should Know”

2001

  • SIDC launched the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme on 18 January, aimed at promoting a culture of continuous learning and skill enhancement among licensed representatives in the Malaysian capital market. The CPE programme is mandatory for all licensed representatives in Malaysia. CPE-approved courses are being offered on CD-ROMs and online, in addition to the traditional instructor-led courses.
  • Co-organised with IBFIM a seminar entitled “Islamic Private Debt Securities: Exploring New Opportunities in the Capital Market”
  • The first and second Emerging Market Programme (EMP) was held in April and October. This inaugural programme aimed at working closely with other emerging market regulators in promoting international regulatory standards.
  • Organised a capital market seminar for the Malaysian judiciary which included judges from the Federal Court, Court of Appeal, High Court and Sessions Court.

2000

  • Organised dialogues between the regulators and directors of public listed companies on Disclosure-Based Regulation (DBR).
  • Conducted a seminar on ‘The Code on Corporate Governance: What Directors Need to Know”.
  • Introduced SIDC Saturday Seminars, the first seminar entitled “What Investors Should Know” focused on shareholders’ rights and responsibilities in general meetings and financial analysis tools to help shareholders better understand the stock market.
  • Introduced a new programme, “SIDC Evening Talk”, aimed at facilitating ongoing discussions with eminent personalities on contemporary issues of relevance to the financial market.
  • SIDC brought the “Majlis Penerangan Pasaran Saham Malaysia” to three districts, Pekan (Pahang), Kuala Selangor (Selangor) and Kangar (Perlis).
  • Achieved a major milestone when it developed a futures market training programme at the request of the Commodity and Futures Trading Supervisory Board of Indonesia (BAPPEBTI). The three day intensive course was organised with co-operation of academics from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the Malaysian Futures Brokers' Association.
  • Co-organised the “APEC Regional Seminar for Financial Regulators” with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the South East Asian Central Banks Research and Training Centre (SEACEN).
  • Introduced the “SIDC Capital Market Workshop Series” focused on the general public who are keen on enhancing their understanding of the Malaysian capital market.

1999

  • First educational programme with Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNS) aimed at educating directors of PNS companies, which touched on key issues relating to listing on the KLSE and MESDAQ.
  • Held investor roadshow, entitled the ‘Personal Investment Planning Seminar” in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru.
  • Co-organised a three-day seminar entitled “Regional Seminar on Strengthening Training Programmes and Process” with the South East Asian Central Banks Research and Training Centre (SEACEN) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The seminar was the first to be held since the APEC Ministers of Finance, in 1998, identified the need to strengthen the management of national training processes and programmes.

1998

  • Joint ventured with COMMEX and IBBM to organise a programme on “Colloquium on Surviving the Crisis”
  • Organised the first “Islamic Private Debt Securities” workshop for commercial and merchant banks, discount houses and regulators.
  • Organised a half-day briefing on “Pindaan kepada peraturan-peraturan Suruhanjaya” for journalists.

1997

  • The establishment of the RM5 million Bumiputera Training Fund (BTF). It is managed by the Commission (through SIDC) to enable Bumiputera employees of stockbroking companies (SBC) the opportunity to receive appropriate training for their technical and developmental skills enhancement.
  • Organised an international seminar on clearing and settlement for members of the emerging markets group of the IOSCO.
  • Held an Asset Securitisation workshop in December, as a part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Collaborative Initiative, with the objective of discussing pertinent issues to facilitate asset securitisation in the APEC Economies.
  • Conducted half-day seminar for members of the Malaysian Institute of Directors (MID).
  • Collaborated with Institut Kehakiman dan Perundangan (ILKAP), to organise a briefing for judicial and legal officers.
  • Established the first MOU with University Teknologi Mara (formerly known as ITM) to incorporate the Malaysian Futures and Options module.

1996

  • Held its first MFORR workshop at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to provide Bumiputera graduates with the opportunity to seek employment with futures brokers in trading, risk management, compliance and back room operations.
  • Organised the Train the Trainers (TTT) programme for university lecturers in the field of derivatives and risk management.
