2006
Nurturing knowledgeable investors is integral to the development of the capital market. We strive to keep investors well informed of their rights and responsibilities, both as investors and as clients of intermediaries.
- To reach a wider audience, the SIDC, collaborated with the FMUTM to distribute 30, 000 educational booklets through unit trust agents.
- The SIDC also participated in two media interviews with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) on how to be a wise investor and published 36 educational articles in the local dailies.
- The SIDC conducted community briefings, road shows and exhibitions to raise awareness on investors’ rights and to highlight various sources of investment information. The public was advised on how to lodge complaints on suspected securities law infringements. In total, 28 programmes were organized at various locations in Malaysia and approximately 4,700 participants attended the sessions.
- An essay writing competition entitled “My Investment Experience” was organized from 1 June 2006 to 30 September 2006. The competition was aimed at encouraging Malaysian investors to share their personal investing knowledge and experience.
- The Malaysian Investor website (www.min.com.my) continues to provide articles and information on wise investing, investors’ rights and responsibilities, and how to spot scams. It also allows us to interact with Internet-savvy investors.The website achieved an average monthly hit rate of 646,794.
2005
- The launch of the IQ Bijak Labur campaigne on 4 October 2005. The objectives of the campaign are to create awareness about prudent investing in the Malaysian capital market, promote understanding of investing in a DBR environment and encourage informed investment decisions.
- Published a booklet entitled “Frequently Asked Questions from Novice Investors”, a free, tri-lingual booklet in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin. Advertisements for this booklet were placed in newspapers and e-newspapers, nationwide campaigne posters and the MIN website.
- A total of 25 Investor Education Talks (IETs) were held, capturing more than 4,500 investors, comprising public servants, private sector employees, university students and the general public.
- Participated in five exhibitions namely PNB Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (PNB), Perkhidmatan Maklumat Komuniti organised by the National Library, Financial Planning Week organised by the Money Compass magazine, Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC) exhibition and Financial Expo organised by the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM).
- Published a total of 62 editorials in various major dailies and magazines.
- The MIN website recorded an average monthly hit rate of 700,895, an increase of 41 percent compared to the previous year. The highest hit rate was recorded in October (1.5 million hits).
- Further intensified its strategic partnerships with the following agencies/organisations:
- Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM)
- SIDC and CCM co-authored an article addressing common questions posed by shareholders of PLCs.
- Ministry of Domestic, Trade and Consumers Affairs
- The ministry published SIDC’s articles in its Buletin Pengguna magazine.
- Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)
- SIDC participated in BNM’s nationwide programme to educate university students on financial matters
- Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM)
- SIDC collaborated with FPAM to publish a brochure on “Insights to choosing a financial planner”, the first educational brochure in which SIDC collaborated with an industry association
- Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM)
2004
Continued to intensify investor education activities through the following activities:
- A total of 60 IET sessions were organised, which recorded 2,610 participants, comprising public servants, private sector employees, university students and the general public.
- Participated in two exhibitions i.e. the annual Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (MSAM) organised by PNB and Invest Malaysia organised by Bursa Malaysia.
- A total of 69 articles were published in various newspapers and magazines.
- Established collaboration with The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) to conduct community briefing for the Chinese investors. The programme, conducted in Mandarin, aimed to equip the Chinese investors with necessary investment knowledge and skills. SIDC acted as the content developer and provided educational brochures for these community briefings. A total of seven briefings were conducted nationwide
- The Malaysian Investor website (www.min.com.my) continued to reach its audience. Highlights of the Malaysian Investor website include:
- The hit rates of the website increased significantly in 2004 to a peak of 620,720. The average monthly hit rate is 496,217.
- 67 articles from the site were reproduced and published by local newspapers.
- Received a total of 99 queries from investors.
- Organised the SIDC Partners in Investor Education (PIE) Recognition ceremony. This event was held to recognise the efforts, support and commitments of various organisations in advancing and promoting investor educational messages and programmes to the public. A total of ten recipients were awarded the PIE award for the year 2003 namely Bursa Malaysia, Light & Easy Radio Station, Marie Claire Magazine, Ministry of Domestic, Trade & Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Women & Family Development, Oriental Daily, Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Sin Chew Daily and Star Publications.
2003
- Establishment of SIDC Investor Education unit
- Launched “My Investments, My Rights” campaign, a nationwide outreach programme to promote the rights of investors to seek information, right to voice opinions and right to lodge complaints.
- The Malaysian Investor (www.min.com.my), a dedicated website for Malaysian investors was further enhanced to provide basic and updated information to investors on wise investing. The website was ranked as one of the top 88 Malaysian websites under the financial category by theedgedaily.com, a leading business news website.
- A series of Investor Education Talks (IETs) were organised to provide avenues for investors to interact with SIDC staff and raised question on investment. A total of 52 IETs were held nationwide.
- A total of ten exhibitions were conducted in major towns namely Alor Setar, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bharu, Seremban and Ipoh.
- Published 36 articles in various newspapers and magazines to ensure SIDC educational materials and messages reached a wider investor population.
- Light & Easy, a local radio station, through its “Word and Money” segment aired investor education messages from MIN website.
- Initiated a partnering initiative with Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), whereby PNB distributed SIDC educational brochures at its 18 branches nationwide and provided avenues for SIDC to hold investment talks at their seminars.
