Harnessing the Power of Big Data Analytics

Harnessing the Power of Big Data Analytics

Dates:  4 April 2018 (8.30am - 12.30pm)
Venue: Securities Commission Malaysia
Accreditation: SIDC CPE-approved: 5 CPE points

For the development of Malaysia’s digital ecosystem, Big Data Analytics has been identified as one of the major catalysts of change that will lead the country to the forefront of innovation and sustainability. For the Malaysian capital market, specifically, Big Data Analytics is recognised as a game changer among industry players and the first movers of big data will definitely have an edge over the competition.

The impact big data is making in the financial world is more of a splash than a ripple. The technology is scaling at an exponential rate and the consequences are far-reaching. Increasing complexity and data generation is transforming the way industries operate and the financial sector isn’t exempt.

Currently, the world is creating 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily and this represents a unique opportunity for processing, analysing and leveraging the information in useful ways. Machine learning and algorithms are increasingly being used in financial trading to compute vast quantities of data and make predictions and decisions that humans just do not have the capacity for. - Gary Eastwood for CIO, licensed by Bloomberg

Big Data Analytics provides the capital market industry with an opportunity to move away from its legacy systems and traditional methods of analytics inherently fraught with human error to a faster, scalable, more efficient and accurate way of decision making. Massive amounts of complex information from multiple sources can now be crunched and analysed to provide conclusions in a matter of minutes or seconds. Better decision making mechanisms, in turn, will translate into revenue growth, better compliance and risk management for the early adopters.

This programme seeks to provide awareness to the participants of the capabilities, advantages and opportunities that Big Data Analytics has to offer, particularly for the capital market. This includes using big data for financial modelling, providing real time analytics for algorithm trading and machine learning.
